SS Mormacgulf/KPUC

I was a relief Radio Officer over the Christmas Season on this ship. We sailed from New York and called at the following ports: Paranagua, Brazil; Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Porto Allegre do Sol all in Brazil; Montevideo, Uruguay and Buenas Aires, Argentina, St. John, New Brunswick, Candada, Baltimore, Norfolk and New York.

The radio room was located aft with no forward or side portholes. Needless to say it was a miserable job. I used to sleep out on deck in a cot rather than sweat all night. In the equatorial areas I would frequently be awakened by rain showers. We took mainly USDA bagged flour and grain down and brought back Coffee. I got to practice my Spanish. I remember Buenos Aires had wide streets done in the European style. On our return to North America we made a call at St. John New Brunswick, Canada. It was much like any small New England city. I was amazed at the tidal range in the Bay of Fundy. I believe it varies by 36 feet.

I received a relief job on SS Mormacgulf which was on the East Coast of South America Run. The ship was another old beat up rustbucket built in 1945. The ships classification was a C-3, a bit of an improvement on the C2 I had been on.
